Selecting the right blogging platform – blogger or wordpress
Picking out a Blogging platform can be tricky when you have no or little experience in blogging. To sort this out we need to consider few things. But before that, I’m ruling out Tumblr and Typepad out of the picture because neither of them are as cost efficient as Blogger or WordPress or provide as many features and functionalities. Both blogger and wordpress can both be used to create professional websites that too with 0$ investment.
This post is not a comparison between the two services but rather a general walkthrough on how to proceed in picking a service.
Time you want to spend on setting up
Most important thing is the time you want to spend on setting up the blog playing with themes and tweaking different sections. On both Blogger and WordPress you can customise your site anyway you want. However the themes and plugins available for wordpress are very large in number as compared to Blogger.
But all that can achieved on WordPress can also be achieved on blogger, it may however take up a little more Time.
Blogger offers a simpler layout for beginners and a more direct approach, whereas on wordpress it may take you a couple of days to get used to the interface, the difference however is very little.
How you want to use your blog
If you are planning to use your blog as a full-fledged CMS, you may as well rule out Blogger at this very point.
Blogger is a fierce competitor of WordPress if you want to establish a blog, a blog with some simple pages and nothing else
On wordpress you can create a social network, a forum, sub-sites, a site composed of just static pages all at once, which cannot be done on blogger.
E-Commerce
If you plan on selling stuff through your site, Blogger will not be a solution to your problem.
Wordpress?
Definitely!
Wordpress not only can turn your blog/site into a shopping website, you have several plugins to chose from which can be themed!
Cost efficiency and investment
If you are setting up your blog with a limited investment budget, selecting a platform can be important to get the value out of your investment.
If you are not willing to spend money for hosting i strongly recommend using blogger and not wordpress, wordpress can be used most efficiently on a self hosted server.
Blogger can be used to create a completely professional website/blog with a custom top level domain name for as low as $10 a year. It can be used with all features for free, if you are willing to use the .blogspot subdomain.
